How the time flies. We went to New York City over the weekend for my brother-in-law’s wedding in Central Park. It was a lovely ceremony, followed by a great dinner and a little bar hopping.

the newly-weds

We stayed in a hostel in Chinatown for the weekend. Short of crashing on someone’s floor, you can’t find a cheaper way to stay in New York. Plus, Chinatown was great fun, so long as you can handle making your way through a crowd. The street vendors sell everything, from fruit to live seafood to socks to decorations for your home. Much of it is lucky. Just ask.

Lucky

We explored the area around Chinatown on foot, which is the best way to see a city. I really enjoy the way neighborhoods intersect, like Chinatown and Little Italy. We walked to the financial district and stumbled upon St. Paul’s, Manhattan’s oldest public building in continuous use. The Chapel was completed in 1766! We walked through the chapel, and very quickly realized where we were- just across from Ground Zero. This wasn’t a planned visit, we were just passing through the area to see it, and to find a yarn store. Hunting for yarn can take you to interesting places.

St. Paul's St. Paul's

I took no pictures of the hole in the ground that we can’t seem to fill.

We continued on through the narrow streets, thinking about the way the city must have been pre-automobile, and we finally found the well hidden yarn store, Seaport Yarns.

Yarn Yarn

That is just a glimpse of how packed with yarn this place was. It’s on the 5th floor of a building in the financial district, and some of the rooms are still offices. I guess the woman running the business was looking for something else to expand into after 9/11, since business was at a stand-still. What a great selection! They had so much, it was wild. The woman working there that day was very nice and helpful too. I actually did not buy anything, since I was still thinking about the money I spent at YarnCon.

I love New York, the neighborhoods, the food, Central Park, more graffiti than I could take pictures of, and now my lovely brother and sister-in-laws.

We got home on Saturday night, this time with no trouble from the #$%&*! TSA. Ok, rant time. I hate airport security. I am so sorry my bra hooks set off your metal detector, I know they didn’t before the world got overly paranoid. I feel no safer for having to partially undress and discard my water, and oh, let’s not let a small bottle of moisturizing lotion out of the ziplock! Whatever might happen!

Ahem. Anyway, we went home, freshened up and went right out again to a housewarming party in Hyde Park. Iffy and Jenny have the most beautiful home, and Iffy is indeed the King of BBQ.  Although we were tired, I am glad we went, we had a fun time.
On Monday, Sara and I modeled knitwear designed by Iris Schreier for her book Lacy Little Knits. We got to do the whole cat-walk thing on ABC Monday morning news. Click on the link to see the story, and the video clip. I took Iris’ workshop that night at Loopy, and really enjoyed her techniques and her desire to make enjoyable patterns to knit.

The weekend in review

Where to even start? Ok, I’ll start with a request. Please go vote as often as you can for Brenda’s video at the apartments.com Possession Obsession contest. Help Brenda beat the junk girl and win $20,000! And it’s not just because Brenda rocks, her collection and video deserve to win.

On to YarnCon! Could we have assembled a nicer and more talented group of people? The only real problem I had all day was not having enough money to spend! I did buy a few things, to be sure, and since books might be an ever greater weakness than yarn, and books that talk about yarn are the greatest weakness of all, I bought books. I picked up Susan Strawn’s Knitting America: A Glorious Heritage from Warm Socks to High Art. Susan was very sweet, and sold out of her books. I might have to order a copy of this book for my mom, she couldn’t get enough of the samples of knitting that Susan brought with her, and was immersed in the book later that day. I also got the delightful Shannon Okey’s (AKA Knitgrrl) Spin to Knit: The Knitter’s Guide to Making Yarn. I wish I didn’t already own Naughty Needles: Sexy, Saucy Knits for the Bedroom and Beyond so I could have bought it from our surprise guest, Nikol Lohr. I bought lots of other goodies and I will take pictures and tell you about those soon as well. I already started a swatch with the lovely cotton yarn I bought from Lisa at Carpool…

A very exciting moment for me was the chance to sit for Franklin’s 1000 Knitters Project. I am not shy in front of a camera, but never have a felt as at ease as I did when sitting for Franklin. What an unbelievably sweet person. Thank you Franklin! I hope I get to see my picture! But, having seen the other pictures I have no worries, and am honored to be a part of his project. My only regret is that I did not get a picture of Franklin!
Speaking of pictures…

It’s all about yarn and metal in my world right now. Next Saturday, Oct. 13 is YarnCon! This is shaping up to be a fabulous event, please come and check it out if you can. We’ll have 2 authors selling and signing their books, Franklin will be there taking pictures for his 1000 knitters project, over 20 vendors, food from the Heartland Cafe, and more workshops than you can shake a knitting needle at.

Here is the metal I’ve been working on:

Size 10.5 skulls

SIze 8 bats

Even when working with metal, I have yarn on the brain.

Oh, the car is back, and operational.  Whew.  I sure do get lots of knitting done in waiting rooms these days.

Dear Car,

Monday, October 1st, 2007

I know we have been together for a long time, and I know you are tired. Please hang on for a while longer. Even just another year would be great. I hope they are treating you well at the shop, and I can come and get you today.

Sigh. Cars.

Other than shelling out to have my car repaired, I have been crazy busy preparing for YarnCon, and keeping up with custom orders. I did manage to sneak in a little work of my own while waiting for castings and supplies to arrive. Want to see?

Bats, size 8

Size 8 knitting needles. These are in silver, the rest will be in aluminum. The silver ones are just too heavy. Here is a look at the size 10.5 heads:

getting ready for the needles

These are aluminum, I think they look really cool, almost industrial. They are very light, I am pleased with them so far.

I have also been knitting any moment I can, like at the waiting room at the auto mechanic’s, the train ride home from the auto mechanic’s, the back of Sara’s car, when watching TV, you get the idea.

I’m not sure as to the future of this piece, but I am having fun knitting it up.

Please call me soon car doctor, I can’t start anything big knowing I have to get back on the CTA to get the car.  Sigh.
