How the time flies. We went to New York City over the weekend for my brother-in-law’s wedding in Central Park. It was a lovely ceremony, followed by a great dinner and a little bar hopping.
We stayed in a hostel in Chinatown for the weekend. Short of crashing on someone’s floor, you can’t find a cheaper way to stay in New York. Plus, Chinatown was great fun, so long as you can handle making your way through a crowd. The street vendors sell everything, from fruit to live seafood to socks to decorations for your home. Much of it is lucky. Just ask.
We explored the area around Chinatown on foot, which is the best way to see a city. I really enjoy the way neighborhoods intersect, like Chinatown and Little Italy. We walked to the financial district and stumbled upon St. Paul’s, Manhattan’s oldest public building in continuous use. The Chapel was completed in 1766! We walked through the chapel, and very quickly realized where we were- just across from Ground Zero. This wasn’t a planned visit, we were just passing through the area to see it, and to find a yarn store. Hunting for yarn can take you to interesting places.
I took no pictures of the hole in the ground that we can’t seem to fill.
We continued on through the narrow streets, thinking about the way the city must have been pre-automobile, and we finally found the well hidden yarn store, Seaport Yarns.
That is just a glimpse of how packed with yarn this place was. It’s on the 5th floor of a building in the financial district, and some of the rooms are still offices. I guess the woman running the business was looking for something else to expand into after 9/11, since business was at a stand-still. What a great selection! They had so much, it was wild. The woman working there that day was very nice and helpful too. I actually did not buy anything, since I was still thinking about the money I spent at YarnCon.
I love New York, the neighborhoods, the food, Central Park, more graffiti than I could take pictures of, and now my lovely brother and sister-in-laws.
We got home on Saturday night, this time with no trouble from the #$%&*! TSA. Ok, rant time. I hate airport security. I am so sorry my bra hooks set off your metal detector, I know they didn’t before the world got overly paranoid. I feel no safer for having to partially undress and discard my water, and oh, let’s not let a small bottle of moisturizing lotion out of the ziplock! Whatever might happen!
Ahem. Anyway, we went home, freshened up and went right out again to a housewarming party in Hyde Park. Iffy and Jenny have the most beautiful home, and Iffy is indeed the King of BBQ. Although we were tired, I am glad we went, we had a fun time.
On Monday, Sara and I modeled knitwear designed by Iris Schreier for her book Lacy Little Knits. We got to do the whole cat-walk thing on ABC Monday morning news. Click on the link to see the story, and the video clip. I took Iris’ workshop that night at Loopy, and really enjoyed her techniques and her desire to make enjoyable patterns to knit.
